Genre: Fantasy
Age: 7+
Description: Mildred Hubble is a witch in training at Miss Cackle’s Academy and she’s not too good at it. She can’t ride her broomstick, she gets most spells incorrect, and she made a deadly enemy out of snotty Ethel when she accidentally turned her into a pig. When Mildred decides to run away she comes across a group of evil witches in the woods plotting to take over the school. Can Mildred finally do something right and save the day?
Opinion: This is the book which made a movie in 1986 which most Harry Potter detractors claim was the actual inspiration for Harry Potter, except the main character was a girl. It is a breezy book. People can relate to Mildred when they feel that everything they do is wrong. The names of the characters and the author’s own illustrations, however, horribly date the book but it is still a great fantasy read for new readers.
