Description:
Rob is a twelve-year-old underachiever. His mom, who used to work in a
bookstore, always tries to get him to read but he always just throws the books
she gives him into the bottom of his closet—the very same closet he once tried
to turn into a science lab for experiments. One night he hears some odd sounds
and a small, weird creature pops out of his closet. His best friend, Trevor, recognizes
the creature as a mish-mash of two famous literary characters—Willy Wonka and
Frankenstein’s creature. To understand the creature better, Rob reads both
books and finds he enjoys them. Wonkenstein ends up causing some havoc but in
the end Rob ends up enjoying his company so when Wonk says he has to go back
into the closet Rob is sad to see his new friend go. That is until the closet
starts making more weird sounds and spits out Potterwookiee (who will be the
focus of the sequel in September).
Opinion: A
fun book in the line of Wimpy Kid, Popularity Papers, and Vordak—it’s an
illustrated novel. This one is actually done in all blue ink. It is a great
choice for reluctant readers and guys. It has great humor, some weird
illustrations, and with the mix of Harry Potter and Star Wars in the sequel
people will want it.
