Genre:
Fantasy
Age: 9+
Description:
Rebecca is in town for the funeral of her grandpa Gabe who lived in the town’s
“haunted” house. She meets Max, Noah, and Theo and they decide to investigate
the house. Finding out everything is going to be sold in an estate sale,
Rebecca sneaks back in later that night with Max because she wants to keep her
grandpa’s old notebooks. There they accidentally discover what appears to be an
old movie projector that can open up to other dimensions where shadows are evil
creatures out to kill. Too bad for Rebecca that she gets sucked in and stuck
there.
Opinion: The Elsewhere Chronicles is an
interesting premise but in graphic novel format the story really doesn’t come
off—it actually would be better as a novel. The world building is just missing.
There are too many questions—why is Rebecca important to these people, how did
she really get her scar when she was younger, what really causes the horrible memories
she has from her childhood? I found out later that there are additional volumes
of this Belgium
import so hopefully these nagging questions get answered. The art is fun but
too dark at times to actually decipher what is going on.
