Genre:
Realistic, School Story, Romance
Age: 9+
Description:
Nicolette “Nick” Spicer is a total tomboy and a star player on her basketball
team. While her classmates seem more interested in shopping and makeup, Nick is
more into the latest b-ball sneakers. However, when new boy Ben shows up she
finally finds herself interested in a boy (asides from the popular Greg who
everyone is in love with). When Ben keeps hanging around Hannah, Nick’s team
rival and ultimate jock/girly girl, Nick suspects that Ben is only interested
in girly girls. So when Lindsay, her best friend, suggests a makeover it seems
like a great idea . . . . until the results start attracting Greg instead of
Ben. Is Nick even Nick anymore or is she turning into the real Nicolette?
Opinion:
While I’ve read the Poison Apple books (a line focusing on stories with a
supernatural twist) and am eagerly awaiting the new Rotten Apple imprint (out
in August with a focus on zombies) this was my first book in the Candy Apple
line which is marketed as “sweet, fresh, fun, take a bite!” While as a series
one would expect the quality to waiver from book to book with different authors
writing them, it was actually quite entertaining. It’s nothing new to the genre
but the writing is lively and the characters are engaging enough. It was a
super fun read.
